To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re focusing on all the badass women who are part of the OOMPH community. 

But first, we’ve got some tips to help women feel empowered and ready to take their fitness goals to the next level. So, if you’re looking for a sign to get back in the game, this is it.

Ladies - let’s celebrate being a woman by pushing those fitness goals. Here are a few ways to get started.

Smash Your Fitness Goals for International Women’s Day

Skip the Dieting

Especially for women, diet culture seems to be unrelenting. Women are told to eat less and diet more, and in truth, none of it really works. 

Instead, focus on a colorful whole food diet and eat foods that make you feel full and satisfied. Then, when you treat yourself, make sure it’s actually a treat and not an everyday thing. That way, you won’t be binging every night and starving yourself during the day.

In short, listen to your body, respect it by eating nutritious foods, and every once in a while, let yourself have a treat to celebrate. Show fad diets the door once and for all.

Prove Yourself Wrong

It’s so easy to have limiting beliefs about yourself or what you can do. That’s why kickboxing is such a great workout for women -- it proves those stories wrong! Women can pack a mean punch and a powerful kick. And even though it seems like a man’s thing, women love it too!

OOMPH Empowers Women Through Fitness

Part of our mission at OOMPH is to empower women through fitness (one punch at a time). Who said kickboxing is only for men anyway? We know that women pack just as much power as men and can get a lot out of incorporating kickboxing into their fitness routine.

Here, we’re sharing Amelia's story, an incredible women who is kicking ass with OOMPH.

1. Where does your fitness motivation come from?

My fitness motivation comes from my (now 4 yr old) son. I want to be the best possible version of me that I can be, both physically and mentally, so I can be around longer for him. I want to always be an active momma who can keep up with her child and also teach him by example what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. 

2. What's one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting?

One piece of advice that I would give to someone who is just starting out would be to not compare yourself to others (ex fitness influencers/models etc) and to keep track of YOUR own achievements. Not everybody progresses at the same pace and for someone starting out, comparison to someone who has been training for years can do more harm than good. Writing down your own achievements can be so encouraging and can keep you motivated in your fitness journey, even if these achievements seem small (ex: doing 2 more push ups than yesterday or mastering the pistol squat). 

3. How have you stayed consistent during quarantine?

During quarantine, it has been super easy for me to stay consistent. Even though I have been working throughout this pandemic (being in healthcare), I have always made an effort and made time for workouts as exercise does help to boost the immune system - super important in times like this! With a lot of businesses temporarily closed in Ontario due to Covid, there is nowhere to go and not much to do, so there is really no excuse to miss a workout!

4. How has fitness positively impact your life?

Fitness has positively impacted my life in so many ways, from being able to keep up with my busy preschooler to allowing me to fit back into my pre-pregnancy clothes. The most important way that fitness has impacted my life would be the self confidence that I have gained, knowing that I am strong both physically and mentally. Although I am not model material (lol), I have never felt better about myself and have never had as much energy as I do now, compared to when I just started my fitness journey years ago!
