Our first tip for better self-care in 2021 is understanding why it’s so important. Especially while many of us remain in quarantine for far longer than anyone would’ve ever expected, self-care has never been more important.
Often, we care for others more than we care for ourselves. Whether it’s making dinner for our spouse or ensuring that our kids get enough time outdoors, it’s easier to take care of others who are relying on us.
This is why it’s so important to figure out how to show up for yourself, especially when no one is watching.
Healthy Food = Healthy Mind
The first step toward strong self-care is fueling your body with healthy, nutritious foods. In quarantine, it’s tempting to order UberEats for every meal and let your health goals fall to the wayside. After all, who’s going to know?
Well, sooner or later, the stress of isolation will begin to take its toll. And, if you want to strengthen your mind against unhelpful thoughts or feelings of helplessness, healthy foods can make a huge difference.
It sounds bizarre, but our brains need healthy fats to function properly and ward against poor mental health. Of course, there’s more work to be done beyond our diet, but it’ll be nearly impossible even to start that work if you don’t have enough fuel in your body to get there.
So, a great start toward better self-care is a nutritious diet. It’ll feel good to show up for yourself and cook your meals as well.
Once your brain has fuel, you can now start to work on your thoughts and mindset during quarentine.
Meditation means focusing on your breath, or a mantra, to notice your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Your thoughts become clouds. You don’t push them away, but you simply watch them. Some linger, and some move along. Both are ok. It’s all about noticing.
It’s difficult to put into words what meditation means for self-care, but if you’re willing to try it, you might be surprised at how much better you feel.
At-Home Fitness Tips
When your body has fuel and your mind is calm, there are a few things you can then do to help with your at-home fitness routine, another huge piece of the self-care puzzle.
- Set up a designated workout area in your home (it doesn’t have to be much).
- Leave your workout clothes out to nudge you in the right direction.
- Choose a workout that you actually enjoy.
- Find accountability by starting a challenge or using our app.
Time Management = Less Stress
And last but not least, self-care means not spreading yourself thin. Being busy has become a badge of honor, but really, no one benefits from overworking themselves.
Practice time management to lower your stress levels and give yourself a break. It’s not very respectful to yourself to continually be at the mercy of other people’s needs. Give yourself some buffer between commitments and set boundaries that you enforce.
It’s possible to be productive without being busy and stressed. Not to mention, rest is just as important as the work.
